Pointers Runaway from Superior

STEVENS POINT – After leading by five at halftime, the 11th-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team pulled away in the second half to defeat UW-Superior by a final score of 78-57 on Alumni Day in Quandt Fieldhouse.

The Pointers have now won four straight games and have an overall record of 13-3 and a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) record of 5-2. The Yellowjackets fall to 7-8 overall and 3-4 in the conference. The Pointers have won nine straight games over Superior.

The Pointers got out to an 8-2 lead by the first media timeout following a Khalifa El-Amin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Jr.-Milwaukee/Rufus King) jumper. The Yellowjackets took their first lead at 12:33 after a 7-0 run made the score 11-10. Stevens Point answered with a 7-0 run of its own to make the score 17-11 with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. The Pointers had another 7-0 run a little bit later in the first half to make the score 25-15 with six minutes remaining. Superior did not go away as it cut the lead down to three and went into halftime down just 34-29.

The Pointers shot 52 % in the half, while the Yellowjackets shot 41 %. Superior's rebounding kept them in it as it had a 21-11 advantage on the glass, including 10 offensive rebounds that led to seven second-chance points.

Khalifa El-Amin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) began the second half with a three-pointer for the Pointers and Yellowjackets only got as close as six the rest of the game. The Pointers had a 7-0 run to extend its lead to 44-31 with 17 minutes to play. Stevens Point had another 7-0 run to make the score 63-43 with seven minutes left in the game. The Pointers had an 8-0 run at the end of the game as they went on to win 78-57.

Superior's bench got shutout in the second half, while the Pointer bench scored 19 points. Stevens Point shot 53 % for the game. The Pointers were 9-for-18 on three-point attempts and 13-for-16 from the free throw line. The Yellowjackets shot just 38 % and were 5-for-20 from beyond the arc. The Pointer defense did a great job on Jake Smith as he scored just three points on 1-for-7 shooting. Smith is the second-leading scorer in the conference.

Bryan Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) (Jr.-Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) led the Pointers with 13 points. Khalifa El-Amin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) added 10 points and five assists. Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Fr.-Milwaukee/Rufus King) scored a career-high 10 points off the bench. Louis Hurd (Portage/Portage) (Fr.-Portage) had nine points and led the Pointers with seven rebounds. Steve Hicklin (Sussex/Hamilton) (Sr.-Sussex/Hamilton) had six assists to go along with eight points. Dwight Hill had a game-high 20 points for the Yellowjackets.

The Pointers will host UW-Eau Claire Wednesday night at Quandt Fieldhouse. The action begins at 7 p.m.
