MEQUON – The second-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team remained unbeaten tonight with a 10-1 victory over Concordia University (Wis.) at the Ozaukee Ice Center.
The Pointers improve to 11-0-0 overall and 7-0-0 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). The Pointers are off to their third 11-0 start in team history. The Falcons remain winless this season with a 0-11-2 overall record and a 0-8-0 in NCHA action.
The Falcons did strike first just two minutes in to make the score 1-0. However, the Pointers would score the next 10 goals. Jamie Lewandowski (Rolling Meadows, IL/Fremd) (Sr.-Rolling Meadows, IL/Fremd) put the Pointers on the board with a little less than 12 minutes remaining with a power play goal to tie the contest 1-1. Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) (Jr.-Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) gave the Pointers the lead shortly after to make the score 2-1. Dana Carothers (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville) (Fr.-Burnsville, MN) scored the final goal of the first period with less than seven minutes to play to make the score 3-1.
Carothers added another goal in the second period to make the score 4-1. Jessica Edward (Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's (MN)) (So.-Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's) then scored an even-handed goal to extend the lead to 5-1.
Trish Piskula (Antigo/Antigo) (Jr.-Antigo) scored back-to-back goals in the third period to make the score 7-1. Grossmann then scored her second goal on the power play to make it 8-1. Lewandowski then scored her second goal to make it 9-1 and Kellye Nelson (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) (So.-Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) concluded the scoring with less than a minute to play to make the final score 10-1. It is fifth time in team history that the Pointers have reached the 10-goal plateau in a game.
The Pointers outshot the Falcons 58-28 in the game. Ann Hulme (Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter (NH)) (So.-Shaker Heights, OH/Philips Exeter) had 27 saves to earn the win and improve to 5-0-0 this season. Katie Hirsch had 48 saves in the loss for Concordia.
The Pointers will be in action tomorrow when they play at Lake Forest College. The action is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
