STEVENS POINT – The 11th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team won its eighth game in a row today with a 78-51 victory over UW-Platteville in Berg Gym.
The Pointers improve to a record of 13-1 overall and 4-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play. The Pioneers drop to an overall record of 9-6 and are 3-3 in WIAC games this season. The Pointers have beaten Platteville nine straight times.
Stevens Point scored the first four points, but the Pioneers came back to score the next nine to take an early 9-4 lead. A little bit later, the Pointers went on a 7-0 run to regain the lead at 13-11 after a Janell Van Gomple (DeForest/DeForest) (Jr.-DeForest) three-pointer. After the lead changed hands a couple times, the Pointers went on a 10-0 run and took a 29-20 lead with 3:38 left in the first half. Stevens Point went into halftime by that same nine-point margin 35-26.
Both teams struggled shooting the ball in the first half as the Pointers were 37 % from the field and the Pioneers were 33 %. Platteville had 28-17 edge on the boards, including 13 offensive rebounds. The Pointers were tough defensively as they forced 17 Platteville turnovers that led to 16 points.
The Pioneers came out in the second half and cut the lead to four. From there on out it was all Stevens Point. The Pointers went on a 13-0 run, which was sparked by back-to-back Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) (Sr.-Wausau/East) three-pointers. Later in the second half, the Pointers went on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 32 with less than five minutes remaining. The Pioneers made only one field goal from the 18:34-mark to the 2:25-mark. The Pointers biggest lead was 33 with two minutes remaining and went on to win 78-51.
Stevens Point shot 41 % for the game, while the Pioneers shot just 29 %. The Pioneers finished with 30 turnovers on the night. The Stevens Point bench outscored the Platteville bench 42-6.
The Pointer balance continued as only two Pointers scored in double-figures. Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) had 13 points to lead the Pointers and Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) (Sr.-Two Rivers) had 11 points. Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) (Jr.-Mineral Point) had a team-high 10 rebounds, seven of which coming in the first half. Andrea Flease (New London/New London) (Fr.-New London) had a career-high five assists to lead Stevens Point. Lisa Wubben led Platteville with a game-high 14 points.
The Pointers will host UW-Stout Wednesday at Berg Gymnasium. The tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
