STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team remained unbeaten in 2008 with a 6-2 victory over Augsburg College tonight at Willett Arena.
The Pointers improve to 11-5-1 overall this season. The Pointers are unbeaten in their last six games. It's the longest unbeaten streak since they went 10 games without a loss in 2001-02. Augsburg falls to a record of 2-11-2 overall. The Pointers finish 8-1-1 against non-NCHA teams this season.
The Pointers scored first when with a scramble in front of the Augsburg net Taylor Guay (Boulder, CO/Boulder) (Jr.-Boulder, CO) put the puck in the net with 11 minutes remaining in the first period to make the score 1-0. Pat Lee (Schaumburg, IL/) (So.-Schaumburg, IL) and Reed Lally (Duluth, MN/East) (So.-Duluth, MN/East) assisted the goal. The Auggies tied it up later in the period when Chris Johnson hit a rocket into the net on power play.
Guay then scored his second goal, a short-handed goal, in the second period to make the score 2-1. Chris Conway (Westminster, CO/Northwood) (So.-Westminster, CO/Northwood) had the assist. It was the Pointers first short-handed goal of the season. The Pointers led the NCHA in shorthanded goal last season. Then with under a minutes in the second period Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) (Jr.-Ramsey, MN/Anoka) put the puck in the net to make the score 3-1 Stevens Point at the second intermission.
After the Auggies scored their second power play goal in the third period, the Pointers responded when Brett Beckfeld (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) (Jr.-Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) got his own rebound and scored to make the score 4-2. Shane Foster (Madison/LaFollette) (Jr.-Madison/LaFollette) then put the game away with a pair of goals to make the final score 6-2 Pointers. Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond) (So.-New Richmond) assisted on both of those goals and had three assists on the night.
Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Fr.-Janesville/James Madison) stopped 20 shots in net to improve to 9-2-1 this season and run his unbeaten streak in net to six games. Andrew Kent had 28 saves in the loss for the Auggies.
The Pointers committed 10 penalties for 20 minutes and were 0-for-3 on the power play. Augsburg committed four penalties for eight minutes and was 2-for-9 on the power play.
The Pointers will be in action again next Friday night when they host UW-Eau Claire in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) matchup. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:30 p.m. at Willett Arena.
