Beamish's Three Gives the Pointers a Thrilling Victory

 STEVENS POINT – Bryan Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) (Jr.-Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) hit a three-pointer with three seconds left to lift the 14th-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team to a 70-67 victory over UW-Platteville tonight at Quandt Fieldhouse.

 Beamish finished the night with a career-high 22 points to lead the Pointers to an 11-3 overall record, and a 3-2 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) record. The Pioneers came into tonight's game receiving votes in the D3hoops.com poll and were tied for the conference lead. The Pioneers leave Stevens Point with a 10-4 overall record and a 4-2 WIAC record. The Pointers have won four straight over the Pioneers.

 The Pointers got off to a quick start scoring the first seven points. Five of those points were scored by Beamish. With the score 14-6, Platteville drained back-to-back three-pointers to cut the lead to two. The Pioneers took their first lead of the game with 12 minutes left in the first half after a jump shot by Nick Allen.

 Platteville broke a 21-21 tie with an 8-0 run to take a 29-21 lead with less than six minutes to play in the half. The Pointers responded with an 8-0 run of their own to tie the game back up with two minutes to play. The Pioneers connected on a three-pointer with 13 seconds to go to give Platteville a 34-31 advantage at halftime.

 The first half was evenly played as both teams had 18 rebounds, four turnovers, and 12 points in the paint. The Pioneers shot a little better than the Pointers as Platteville was 43 % in the half and Stevens Point was 39 %.

 A pair of three-pointers in the first three minutes of the second half gave the Pioneers their biggest lead of the game at 42-33. The Pointers rallied with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to one with 15 minutes to play. Louis Hurd (Portage/Portage) (Fr.-Portage) hit a jumper to give the Pointers a 45-43 lead with 13 minutes left. A Beamish layup made the score 49-45 with 11:22 remaining in the game.

 The Pioneers then went on an 8-0 run to take a 53-49 lead. Platteville led by six with eight minutes left and led by five with six minutes remaining. Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) (Jr.-Minocqua/Lakeland) tied the game up at 63-63 with a three-pointer at 3:18. Both teams then traded baskets over the next two minutes as we were still tied with under a minute remaining. After Platteville missed a three, the Pointers held for the last shot. Bryan Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) would setup on the left wing and drained the three-pointer with three seconds remaining. It was the first three-pointer attempted by Beamish in the game. Platteville would get a good chance at the end, but the shot was off the mark as the Pointers won 70-67.

 The Pointers shot 46 % for the game and were 10-for-12 from the free throw line. The Pioneers shot 49 % from the field. Stevens Point had a 22-12 scoring advantage in the paint in the second half.

 Beamish scored 15 of his career-high 22 points in the second half. Khalifa El-Amin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Jr.-Milwaukee/Rufus King) and Steve Hicklin (Sussex/Hamilton) (Sr.-Sussex/Hamilton) each chipped in with 12 points. El-Amin also had a team-high five assists. Beamish and Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) had six rebounds each to lead the Pointers. Charlie Lohoff had 14 points to lead Platteville.

 The Pointers will go on the road Wednesday night when they face UW-Stout. The action gets underway at 7 p.m.
