STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to five games tonight as it defeated Hamline University by a score of 2-1 at Willett Arena.
The Pointers improve to an overall record of 10-5-1 and are 5-1 against teams from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) this season. The five-game unbeaten streak is the longest since the 2003-04 season. Hamline drops to an overall record of 6-4-2 this season.
Neither team would get the puck in the net in the opening period as the Pointers had eight shots on goal and the Pipers had six shots. One of the Pipers shots did hit the pipe.
In the second period, Hamline got on the board just two minutes in when Nick Zilka put the puck in the net on a 2-on-1 break to make the score 1-0 Pipers. The Pointers answered less than two minutes later when Pat Lee (Schaumburg, IL/) (So.-Schaumburg, IL) scored for the third consecutive game to tie the game at 1-1. Garrett Suter (Madison/Oregon) (Fr.-Madison-Oregon) had the assist. Stevens Point took the lead with 14 minutes left in the second period as Hamline turned over the puck right in front of their own net and Ross Johnson (International Falls, MN/Falls) (Jr.-International Falls, MN/Falls) put it past the goaltender to make the score 2-1.
Pointer goaltender Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Fr.-Janesville/James Madison) closed it out from there, stopping 14 shots in the second period and nine shots in the third period as the Pointers hung on to a 2-1 victory. Speer finished with 29 saves on the night to improve to 8-2-1 this season. Matt Wanvig had 32 saves in the loss for the Pipers.
Stevens Point committed five penalties for 10 minutes and Hamline had six penalties for 12 minutes. Hamline came in with the best power play unit in NCAA Division III and they were 0-for-2 tonight.
The Pointers will be in action again tomorrow night at Willett Arena when they host Augsburg College. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:30 p.m.
