Having suffering a tough loss in its opening match on Wednesday, the UW-Stevens Point volleyball team bounced back to sweep Viterbo and split a pair of matches at the Viterbo triangular in La Crosse.
The Pointers lost to St. Mary's 31-29, 25-30, 30-27, 30-22 in the opener, but then rallied to defeat Viterbo 30-26, 30-27, 30-28 to run their record to 3-3 for the season.
Gina Guell (Waupun/Waupun) led the Pointers with 13 kills against St. Mary's, while Shelly Maus (Green Bay/Green Bay Southwest) had 11 kills and nine blocks. Amanda Mix (Brookfield/East) totaled 26 digs and Katie O'Brien (Appleton/Xavier) had seven blocks. Jill Wittmann (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) and Kelsea Mulhern (Waunakee/Waunakee) each had 20 assists.
All four games were tight with St. Mary's scoring the final three points to overcome a game point in the first game and the Cardinals getting the last four points after trailing 27-26 in the third game. St. Mary's used an early 12-2 run to take control of the fourth game, but UW-Stevens Point rallied within 21-19 before the Cardinals closed with a 9-3 spurt.
Against Viterbo, Wittmann led the Pointers with 18 assists and 17 digs. Guell had 11 kills and Maus had 10 kills. The Pointers trailed 15-10 in the third game when Amanda Mix (Brookfield/East) sparked a six-point spurt with three aces as the Pointers took the lead. UW-Stevens Point led 29-24, but the V-Hawks fought off four straight match points before the Pointers pulled out the victory.
