Pointers Start High, Finish Low on West Coast

After opening its west coast trip with a strong start and a pair of victories on Saturday, UW-Stevens Point dropped both of its matches on Sunday to finish 2-2 at the Pacific University volleyball tournament in Forest Grove, Ore.

The Pointers opened with a 30-14, 22-30, 34-32, 30-27 victory over Lewis & Clark (Ore.) and then defeated Baruch (N.Y.) 30-19, 30-11, 30-22. On Sunday, the Pointers lost to 20th-ranked Pacific Lutheran (Wash.) 30-14, 30-24, 30-26 and Pacific (Ore.) 34-32, 30-20, 25-30, 30-20.

Gina Guell (Waupun/Waupun) led the Pointers against Lewis & Clark with 13 kills and Shelly Maus (Green Bay/Green Bay Southwest) added 12 kills and 10 blocks. Jill Wittmann (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) collected 16 digs in the victory. Against Baruch, Maus had nine kills and five blocks, while Kelsea Mulhern (Waunakee/Waunakee) had 14 assists and Kayla Behnke (Newton/Manitowoc Lincoln) had nine digs.

Maus totaled 11 kills and four blocks and Mulhern finished with 14 assists against Pacific Lutheran. Maus amassed 22 kills with just five errors and Wittmann had 26 assists in the loss to Pacific. Guell added 10 kills and Beth Richter (Green Bay/Preble) had nine kills and 11 digs.
