Defense Carries Soccer Team to Shutout Victory

Box Score

Amanda Prawat (Oregon/Oregon) scored a first half goal and UW-Stevens Point's defense did the rest in leading the Pointers to a 1-0 women's soccer victory over UW-Whitewater on Saturday at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.

Prawat took a through ball from Kaylee Weise (Brookfield/East) and then launched a shot from 10 yards out that was over the outstretched hand of Warhawks' goalkeeper Amy Bailey. It was Prawat's fifth goal of the season as the Pointers improved to 3-2-1 for the season. UW-Whitewater is now 4-2 overall. The match was the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

The Pointers dominated the first half with a 12-1 advantage in shots as Bailey made six saves in the half and eight for the match for UW-Whitewater. The Warhawks' best scoring chance came with less than two minutes left in the first half when Sara Brown fired a free kick off the crossbar from 25 yards away.

The second half was played almost entirely in the midfield as the teams combined for only one shot attempt in the first 25 minutes of the half. For the half, UW-Stevens Point outshot the Warhawks 3-2 over the final 45 minutes of the match. In fact, the Pointers' stingy defense limited UW-Whitewater without a shot attempt in the final 17 minutes.
