Record-Setting First Quarter Leads Football to Easy Win

Box Score A record-setting 34-point first quarter was all the UW-Stevens Point football team needed Saturday afternoon in rolling over Iowa Wesleyan for a 54-13 victory in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

The Pointers' 34-0 lead marked the most points UW-Stevens Point has ever scored in an opening quarter and matched the most scored in any quarter. After an interception on its opening drive, UW-Stevens Point scored on its next seven possessions with five touchdowns and two field goals. UW-Stevens Point also added a touchdown on its first drive of the second quarter to lead 41-0 with 12:38 left in the first half.

The Pointers went into cruise control from that point and held the 41-point lead into halftime, falling two points short of the school record for most first half points, which was set against UW-Platteville on Sept. 26, 1954. The previous record for points in a first quarter was 29 against Lakeland on Sept. 4, 1976 and the record for points in any quarter was also 34, coming in the third quarter against UW-Oshkosh on Oct. 30, 1993.

UW-Stevens Point rolled up 525 yards of total offense and was forced to punt once in the game with five of the Pointers' possessions ending on a failed fourth down play.

The Pointers' defense continued to force turnovers with four interceptions and a fumble to give them 26 takeaways during the current six-game winning streak, including 17 in the last three games. Iowa Wesleyan had 74 total yards in the first quarter with 48 coming on the first play of the game.

Michael Ferron rushed nine times for 91 yards, including a seven-yard score for the Pointers' first touchdown. Ryan Graboski (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) added a pair of field goals on the next two possessions from 28 and 32 yards before quarterback Jake Swank (Oregon/Oregon) scrambled for a 16-yard touchdown to put UW-Stevens Point ahead 20-0.

The Pointers intercepted three Iowa Wesleyan pass plays among four passes in the first quarter and Linebacker Lincoln Berg (Edgar/Edgar) scored his second touchdown in as many games with a 13-yard interception return for a score. UW-Stevens Point scored again with one second left in the first quarter when Swank hit Brad Kalsow (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) for a 48-yard touchdown. Ferron finished the early onslaught with a 32-yard touchdown run on the next drive.

T.C. Farber (Waunakee/Waunakee), who rushed 19 times for 75 yards, put the Pointers ahead 47-0 with a one-yard touchdown plunge in the third quarter. Following an Iowa Wesleyan touchdown, Pointers' quarterback Nick Venden (Columbus/Columbus) threw a short pass to receiver Tyler Hau (Glenbeulah/Elkhart Lake-Glen.), who raced through the secondary 83 yards for a touchdown. Hau's first career catch came on the previous drive and the touchdown reception was the 11th longest in UW-Stevens Point history.

Venden was seven-for-11 passing for 151 yards, while Swank was seven-for-14 for 89 yards. Kalsow made four catches for 74 yards and Hau had two receptions for 97 yards. Bryan Blum (Baraboo/Baraboo) led the defense with nine tackles and Dustin Robinson (Florence/Florence) had two interceptions.

The score was remarkably similar to UW-Stevens Point's last meeting with the Tigers when the Pointers posted a 53-13 victory at Goerke Field in 1996. The Pointers' victory was their sixth straight win, matching a winning streak that spanned the last five games of the 2003 season and the 2004 season opener.
