Box Score UW-Stevens Point put a couple of scares into the nation's top-ranked women's soccer team, but Wheaton showed its strength in the end by scoring three late goals to pull away for a 5-2 victory at the Pointer Soccer Bowl in Stevens Point.
It took
Kaylee Weise (Brookfield/East) just 2:17 to put the Pointers out in front as
Amanda Prawat (Oregon/Oregon) broke free in the box and sent a pass that was deflected by the goalkeeper, but Weise was able to collect the loose ball and send it to the back of the net.
The goal was a good sign for the Pointers, who had won 13 straight matches when Weise scored a goal. However, Wheaton's own offensive star, Sarah Richardson, countered with her 10th goal in six matches this year on a shot to the far post at the 15:22 mark.
The Thunder broke the tie at the 35:28 mark as Kari Klynstra connected on a shot from 15 yards out and led 2-1 at halftime.
Pointers' goalkeeper
Meredith DeCaluwe (Naperville, IL/Central), who finished with seven saves, made two big stops early in the second half to keep the one-goal margin. UW-Stevens Point also held possession for most of a 15-minute span midway through the half, but didn't record a shot until Weise broke free in the penalty box and headed a perfect cross from Prawat to tie the match with 15:59 remaining.
It took Wheaton just 35 seconds to bounce back as Taryne Lee picked up a loose ball and fired a shot from 15 yards out that found the net for a 3-2 lead. The goal snapped a string of 515 straight scoreless second half and overtime minutes by the UW-Stevens Point defense.
Wheaton added two late goals with an own goal coming with 12:22 left and a rebound goal by Brittany Bergh with 1:18 remaining.
The Thunder, which has now won 24 straight matches and improved to 6-0 this season, held a 21-7 advantage in shots and goalie Kristin Eggert made two saves. UW-Stevens Point fell to 2-2-1 for the season and opens Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday by hosting UW-Whitewater at 1 p.m.
