Stephanie Anderson (Milwaukee/King) pitched the third perfect game in UW-Stevens Point softball history as the Pointers rolled over UW-Stout with a pair of 9-0 victories on Saturday in Menomonie.
Anderson retired all 18 batters faced with eight strikeouts in the six-inning opening game. The two previous perfect games were by Jeanann Briski against Cardinal Stritch in a five-inning game on March 25, 2002 and by Steph Sobieck against UW-La Crosse on April 23, 1990 in a seven-inning contest.
It was Anderson's second no-hitter this season after also blanking Bridgewater State (Mass.) with one walk earlier in the year. She is the second pitcher in school history to throw two complete game no-hitters in a season, joining Jen Schaper in 1999.
Anderson received plenty of run support, especially from
Korryn Brooks (Stevens Point/SPASH), who was three-for-four with four RBI's. She had a run-scoring double in the first inning, drove in a run on a single in the second and delivered a two-run single in the sixth. Laura Van Abel was also three-for-four and had two RBI's. The Pointers finished with 15 hits and took advantage of four UW-Stout errors.
The Pointers broke open the second game with six runs in the third inning as
Mandy Jellish (Kaukauna/Kaukauna) and
Jackie Berger (Bonduel/Bonduel) each had run-scoring singles to start the scoring and Van Abel followed with a two-run homer.
UW-Stevens Point added three runs in the fifth, which was plenty of runs for
Hope Krause (Mishicot/Mishicot), who pitched a complete-game five-hitter in the five-inning contest. Krause had four strikeouts and walked none for fifth shutout of the season.
The Pointers, ranked 18th in the NCAA Division III, are now 23-5 overall and 8-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-Stout is 13-13 overall and 4-6 in the league. UW-Stevens Point is 10-0 in road games this year and plays at first place UW-River Falls on Sunday in a doubleheader that has been pushed to a 10 a.m. start.
