Proving it can win close games in entirely different ways, UW-Stevens Point earned a softball doubleheader sweep over UW-Platteville by scores of 1-0 and 13-10 on Monday in Platteville.

It was the Pointers' fourth road conference doubleheader in a six-day span and they finished 7-1 during the stretch. In fact, the Pointers are now 13-1 on the road this season and kept their Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship hopes alive with a 26-6 overall record and 11-3 league mark. UW-Platteville fell to 8-20 overall and 1-9 in the WIAC.

Stephanie Anderson (Milwaukee/King) pitched a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and two walks in the opening game. UW-Stevens Point scored the only run in the fourth inning when Sarah Phillips (Kelowna, B.C./St. George's (R.I.)) reached on a two-out throwing error, allowing a runner to score from third base.

UW-Platteville drew both of its walks in the seventh inning and had a runner at third with one out, but Anderson forced a strikeout and groundout to end the game. Six different players had singles for the Pointers.

UW-Stevens Point scored six runs in the first inning of the second game and led 8-0 after two innings before holding on for the victory. Five of the Pointers' first eight runs scored on wild pitches as the Pioneers uncorked seven wild pitches in the first two innings.

UW-Platteville answered with seven runs in the bottom of the third inning. Anderson entered the game during the inning and pitched the final five innings to earn the victory. She allowed two earned runs and struck out four. The Pointers extended the lead back to 11-7 with three runs in the top of the fourth. The 10 runs were the most the Pointers have allowed in a victory since a 21-11 win over Lawrence on April 23, 1996.

Anderson led the Pointers at the plate, going three-for-four with four runs scored. Phillips was three-for-five with two RBI's, while Laura Van Abel, Katherine Mess (Sussex/Hamilton) and Chelsea McIlquham (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie) each had two hits.
