A balanced hitting attack erupted for 19 runs and 26 hits as UW-Stevens Point posted a softball doubleheader sweep at UW-La Crosse on Wednesday.
The Pointers tallied a 9-1 victory in the opening game and then used a six-run fifth inning to pull away for a 10-4 win in the second game and improve to 21-5 overall and 6-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-La Crosse fell to 8-15 overall and 1-5 in the conference. Every starter had at least one hit in each game for the Pointers.
Stephanie Anderson (Milwaukee/King) allowed just four hits and struck out six with no walks in the opening game. She delivered a first inning sacrifice fly to go with a run-scoring single by
Korryn Brooks (Stevens Point/SPASH) for an early 2-0 lead.
Mandy Jellish (Kaukauna/Kaukauna) added a two-run single in the second inning for a 4-0 lead.
UW-La Crosse's Cara Salm led off the fourth inning with a home run for her team's only run, but the Pointers put the game away with a five-run seventh inning, getting a two-run single by Anderson followed by a three-run homer from
Sarah Phillips (Kelowna, B.C./St. George's (R.I.)).
The second game was tied 3-3 before the Pointers' big fifth inning. Anderson and Phillips hit consecutive run-scoring doubles to start the rally and
Jackie Berger (Bonduel/Bonduel) finished the inning with a two-run single. Berger also had a two-run single that put the Pointers' ahead 3-1 in the top of the fourth before UW-La Crosse's Sarah Pfeifer hit a two-run double in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.
Jellish was three-for-five and
Melissa Boldt (New Berlin/Eisenhower) was two-for-four in the second game for UW-Stevens Point, which totaled 14 hits in the win.
Hope Krause (Mishicot/Mishicot) pitched a complete game to earn the victory for the Pointers.
