Schlosser's Home Run Gives Pointers Split at Stout

Tim Schlosser (Oconomowoc/Oconomowoc) hit a dramatic home run to lift the UW-Stevens Point baseball team to a 4-3 victory on Wednesday at UW-Stout, but the Pointers were unable to carry the momentum into the second game and lost 12-8 to split a doubleheader in Menomonie.

UW-Stout scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth in the opening game for a 3-2 lead, but Ryan Byrnes (Beaver Dam/Beaver Dam) led off the ninth with a double and Schlosser homered. Jordan Zimmermann (Auburndale/Auburndale) then retired all three batters in the bottom of the ninth for the save.

The Blue Devils scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning in the second game and held off several Pointer rallies to earn the split. UW-Stevens Point is now 19-12 overall and 11-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while UW-Stout is 18-17 overall and 9-11 in the league.

Schlosser finished three-for-three in the opening game as Brandon Hemstead (DeForest/DeForest) worked seven innings and allowed just five hits with five strikeouts. Jeff Zielke (Watertown/Watertown) entered in the eighth and earned the victory. Zimmermann hit a run-scoring double in the third inning and, after UW-Stout tied the game in the fifth, Joel Hojnacki (Plover/SPASH) put the Pointers back ahead with a run-scoring single in the seventh.

In the second game, UW-Stout took advantage of two Pointer errors and scored four unearned runs in its six-run second inning. The Blue Devils added two more runs in the fourth to lead 8-2 before the Pointers began to rally. Ryan Byrnes (Beaver Dam/Beaver Dam) drove in a run with a double and scored on an error in the sixth and Adam Evanoff (Plover/SPASH) had a run-scoring single in the seventh to cut the lead to 8-5. However, UW-Stout scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and two more in the eighth before the Pointers struck for a three-run rally in the top of the ninth.

Byrnes was four-for-five with three RBI's and Brandon Scheidler (Chippewa Falls/McDonell) was three-for-five to lead the Pointers. Eric Paul was four-for-five for UW-Stout. Travis Kempf (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) allowed eight runs, but just two earned, over five innings to take the loss.
