Krull Notches Career High as Pointers Trip Carroll

Box Score Jon Krull scored a career-high 32 points and UW-Stevens Point opened its season with a victory for the 11th straight year in posting a 93-75 win over Carroll in a matchup of nationally ranked teams on Saturday in Waukesha.

The Pointers, ranked 25th in the NCAA Division III, opened the game red hot from the floor, hitting five of their first six shots, including four three-pointers, in bolting to a 14-4 lead just 3:13 into the game. Carroll scored to cut the lead to 14-6, but the Pointers scored six more consecutive points to lead 20-6 and they held at least a 10-point lead the rest of the way.

Carroll, which is ranked 17th in the country, battled Wisconsin to a relatively tight 81-61 exhibition loss just two weeks ago. The Pioneers were forced into 20 turnovers by the Pointers' defense and shot just four-for-18 from three-point range.

Carroll scored the last five points of the first half to trim UW-Stevens Point's lead to 46-35 at halftime, however, the Pointers scored two quick baskets to open the second half and push the lead back to 15 points. UW-Stevens Point maintained the cushion throughout the entire half and led by as many as 22 points following a three-pointer by Krull that put the Pointers ahead 76-54 with 6:27 remaining.

Krull added seven rebounds with his career-high scoring effort. Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) tallied 13 points and Bryan Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) scored 11 points. The Pointers, who led the country in free throw shooting last year, kept their touch by making 23 of 27 attempts. Buck Colomy led Carroll with 18 points and Nathan Drury had 17 points.

The Pointers take on another ranked foe in Carroll's Midwest Conference rival, Lawrence, on Tuesday in Appleton. The Vikings are ranked 13th in the nation.
