Box Score UW-Stevens Point hit 12 three-pointers and pulled away from Viterbo in the second half for its ninth straight victory with a 75-49 men's basketball win on Wednesday in La Crosse.
The fifth-ranked Pointers connected on six three-pointers in each half and used a seven-point spurt early in the second half to expand on a 32-27 halftime lead for the convincing victory. UW-Stevens Point is now 9-0 overall, while Viterbo had a three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 3-7.
Steve Hicklin (Sussex/Hamilton) had a second straight career-high scoring game for the Pointers with 25 points on five-for-seven three-point shooting after a 23-point performance on Monday against Edgewood. Like Monday night, Hicklin did most of his damage before halftime with 15 first half points.
Viterbo scored the game's first six points and held a small lead for most of the first half until
Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) tied the game 20-20 with a three-pointer with 8:36 left in the first half. Another Rortvedt three-pointer with 3:46 left in the half gave the Pointers a 25-24 lead. UW-Stevens Point scored the last five points of the half for its five-point halftime advantage.
The Pointers led 44-37 with 11:37 left and used a 12-2 run to pull away. Cory Krautkramer finished the rally with a pair of baskets to give the Pointers a 54-39 lead with 7:07 remaining.
Rortvedt had four three-pointers and finished with 14 points, while
Jerome Wotachek (Mishicot/Mishicot) scored a season-best 10 points in 15 minutes off the bench. The Pointers shot 50 percent from the field and had just seven turnovers. Jeremy Fradette led Viterbo with 14 points and eight rebounds as the V-Hawks shot 38.8 percent, including just 34.8 percent in the second half.
