Pointers Improve to 6-0 in WIAC With Win at Stout

Box Score Big runs to open and close the first half and another three-point shooting barrage helped the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team improve to 6-0 in conference play for the first time in 24 years as the Pointers rolled past UW-Stout 80-50 on Saturday in Menomonie.

The Pointers scored the first 10 points of the game and tallied the last eight points of the first half to open up a 44-23 halftime lead. UW-Stevens Point buried nine three-pointers in the first half and 14 for the game, marking sixth straight game the Pointers have connected at least 10 times from behind the arc.

UW-Stevens Point is now 12-1 overall and 6-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the first time since a 7-0 start in 1982-83. UW-Stout is 9-5 overall and 2-4 in the league. It was the Pointers' second lopsided victory this week after beating UW-Superior by 56 points on Wednesday when they were selected as the nation's top-ranked team in the NCAA Division III poll.

After the Pointers' hot start, UW-Stout closed to within 13-12 with 11:58 left in the first half, but Jon Krull and Steve Hicklin (Sussex/Hamilton) hit three-pointers on the Pointers' next two possessions and they never trailed again. The Blue Devils' Jacob Nonemacher had a dunk with 2:57 left in the half, but UW-Stout missed its last five shots of the half and Hicklin and Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) answered with three-pointers to put the Pointers in control.

UW-Stout cut the lead to 49-33 with 17:08 left in the game, however, UW-Stevens Point scored the next 10 points, getting three-pointers from Krull and Hicklin during the spurt. UW-Stevens Point was 14-for-27 from three-point range in the game and shot 55.9 percent from the field.

Krull led the Pointers with 19 points, including 12 in the first half. Hicklin was five-for-six from three-point range to finish with 15 points, while Rortvedt had four three-pointers and finished with 14 points. UW-Stout did not have any players in double figures with Jerel Enerson-Matthews and Dre Jefferson each scoring a team-high seven points.
