Rortvedt Has Big Nights as Pointers Top Pioneers

Box Score Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) had 26 points and sparked a key second half run as UW-Stevens Point improved to 8-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the first time since 1935-36 with a 73-68 win at UW-Platteville on Wednesday.

With the game tied at 44-44 with 11:52 remaining, Rortvedt hit a three-pointer to initiate a 12-2 run and give the Pointers the lead for good. UW-Platteville proceeded to make several runs over the final seven minutes, but UW-Stevens Point had an answer every time.

Both teams shot well as UW-Stevens Point made 54.2 percent of its shots and the Pioneers shot 53.3 percent. The Pointers, ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division III, also had just eight turnovers, below their season average of 8.9 that leads all of college basketball.

The Pointers won in Platteville for the first time since 2002-03 and improved to 15-1 overall and 8-0 in the WIAC with their sixth straight victory. UW-Platteville is 9-6 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

UW-Platteville's Mike Shaw, who led the Pioneers with 16 points, hit a three-pointer with 4:31 left to cut the lead to 62-56, but Steve Hicklin (Sussex/Hamilton) followed with a three-pointer for the Pointers on a possession that was kept alive by three offensive rebounds. Jon Krull added a fastbreak layup after a rebound and pass from Khalifa El-Amin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) for an 11-point lead with 2:58 left.

Mike Jamerson scored seven of the Pioneers' next nine points, including two free throws with 55 seconds left that cut the lead to 68-64. The Pointers worked the shot clock down and fed the ball inside to Krull, who scored a layup for a six-point lead with 22 seconds left.

UW-Platteville's Charlie Lohoff converted a three-point play with 15 seconds left to pull the Pioneers within 71-68, but Rortvedt hit two free throws with 11 seconds remaining to seal the win.

Krull finished with 15 points and Hicklin had 13 points for the Pointers. El-Amin tallied eight points and seven assists. Mark Gossens had 14 points and Jamerson had 12 points for the Pioneers.
