Steve Hicklin (Sussex/Hamilton) scored a career-high 23 points and made seven three-pointers as UW-Stevens Point improved to 8-0 for the season with a 69-47 victory over Edgewood on Monday at the Quandt Fieldhouse.
Hicklin knocked down his first five shots, including four three-pointers, while scoring 14 of the team's first 24 points. He hit three straight three-pointers over a span of four possessions in the second half to finish his career night seven-for-10 from behind the arc. The seventh-ranked Pointers avenged a loss to Edgewood last year and improved to 66-5 in their last 71 games against non-conference opponents.
UW-Stevens Point used a 9-0 to take an early 11-4 lead. Edgewood hung within 10 points for most of the first half before the Pointers closed the half with another nine-point run for a 33-15 halftime lead.
The Pointers extended their spurt with four straight points to start the second half and take a 37-15 advantage. Hicklin's seventh three-pointer gave UW-Stevens Point its largest lead of the game at 50-25 with 13:22 remaining.
Edgewood, which fell to 2-4 overall, shot just 40.9 percent for the game in the lowest point total by a UW-Stevens Point opponent since a 79-45 win over Lawrence in the 2005 NCAA Division III tournament.
Jon Krull scored 10 points and
Bryan Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) had eight points for the Pointers, who had just eight turnovers and shot 43.1 percent from the field with 10 three-pointers. UW-Stevens Point grabbed 17 offensive rebounds and outrebounded the Eagles 37-26.
Edgewood committed just six personal fouls in the game and was led in scoring by Charlie Averkamp with 12 points. Evan Klees scored 11 points off the bench.
