One of UW-Stevens Point's best volleyball seasons in recent history came to an end on Tuesday night in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference quarterfinals as UW-River Falls used a solid all-around performance for a three-game sweep of the Pointers at Berg Gym.
The Pointers, playing their first home postseason match since 1998, fell to the Falcons 30-22, 30-26, 30-19 to finish the year 24-12 overall for their most victories since 1995 and highest winning percentage since 1985. UW-River Falls is now 24-11 and advances to play at UW-Eau Claire in the semifinals on Friday at 5 p.m.
UW-River Falls opened up a 13-8 lead in the opening game and led 19-13 before the Pointers used a 6-1 run to climb to within 20-19. However, the Falcons ended the game with a 10-3 spurt for the victory.
The Pointers had a 14-12 advantage in the second game when UW-River Falls went on a 6-1 run to take an 18-15 lead. Another 6-1 burst put the Falcons seemingly in control with a 24-17 lead. With UW-River Falls up 27-19, the Pointers put on a furious rally by scoring seven of the next nine points, however, the Falcons took a timeout and then went to Kate Thompson, who delivered one of her match-high 15 kills for the final tally.
UW-River Falls scored six straight points for an early 9-4 lead in the third game. The Pointers closed to within 17-15, but the Falcons ended the game by outscoring the Pointers 13-4.
Falcons' middle hitter Andrea Geehan, who did not play in the Pointers four-game win over UW-River Falls during the regular season, totaled 12 kills. Kat Krtnick had 39 assists and Lindsey Mace had 20 digs. The Falcons hit .269 for the match with 10 aces and just two serving errors, including six aces by Molly Thompson.
UW-Stevens Point was led by
Shelly Maus (Green Bay/Green Bay Southwest) with 13 kills.
Callie Kunde (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) added 23 assists and
Lori Marten (Pittsville/Pittsville) had 15 digs.
