UW-Stevens Point picked up a win over Minnesota-Morris for the second straight day to earn a split of two matches and place third at the UW-La Crosse volleyball Invitational on Saturday.
The Pointers nearly rallied for a comeback win over Wartburg in the opening match, dropping the first two games, but surging back before suffering a 30-19, 30-16, 16-30, 23-30, 15-13 loss. UW-Stevens Point then beat Minnesota-Morris in four games for the second straight day with a 30-20, 30-13, 27-30, 30-25 win.
Shelly Maus (Green Bay/Green Bay Southwest) had 14 kills and eight blocks in the victory, while Callie Kunde (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) had 11 kills and 20 assists. Jill Wittmann (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) totaled 21 assists in the win.
In the opening match, Kunde had 26 assists and Lori Marten (Pittsville/Pittsville) totaled 24 digs. Amanda Mix (Brookfield/East) added 12 kills and 20 digs, while Katie O'Brien (Appleton/Xavier) posted eight kills.
On Friday, the Pointers lost their opener to UW-La Crosse 31-29, 30-22, 30-20 with Maus totaling 16 kills and Kunde collecting 25 assists. Marten added 12 digs. UW-Stevens Point came back to beat Minnesota-Morris 30-19, 30-23, 25-30, 30-23 behind 19 kills and nine blocks from Maus. Kunde amassed nine kills and 23 assists and Mix had 19 digs and four aces.
