Maus Reaches 1,000 as Pointers Sweep Triangular

Shelly Maus (Green Bay/Green Bay Southwest) had 17 kills in an opening match win and added 14 more in a second victory, becoming the fourth UW-Stevens Point volleyball player to reach 1,000 career kills as the Pointers swept a triangular on Wednesday at Berg Gym.

The Pointers defeated Beloit in the opening match 30-28, 28-30, 30-28, 30-20 and then prevailed over Lawrence 33-31, 30-26, 30-22 to improve to 14-6 overall for the season. Beloit beat Lawrence in the other match 30-28, 25-30, 30-26, 30-18.

Maus, who now has 1,022 kills in her three-year career, also had seven blocks against Beloit and four against Lawrence. She joins Sarah Kuhl, Tara Raddatz and Peggy Hartl as players to reach the 1,000 mark in UW-Stevens Point's 34-year volleyball history.

Against Beloit, the Pointers led the second game 26-20 before the Buccaneers scored seven straight points to rally for the win. UW-Stevens Point jumped out to an insurmountable 12-3 lead to roll to the fourth game win. It was the second time the Pointers have beaten Beloit in four tight games this year with the losing team scoring at least 26 points in seven of the eight games.

Callie Kunde (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) added a triple-double in the win with 11 kills, 26 assists and 12 digs. Gina Guell (Waupun/Waupun) and Beth Richter (Green Bay/Preble) each had 13 kills, while Jill Wittmann (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) had 23 assists and 20 digs and Lori Marten (Pittsville/Pittsville) totaled 24 digs.

The Pointers fought off four game points to take the opening game against Lawrence with Kunde getting three straight kills to pull the game to even at 29-29. She finished the match with 11 kills, 27 assists and nine digs. Marten added 28 digs and Wittmann had 15 assists.
