A cold shooting night plagued the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team as the Pointers suffered their first loss of the season with a 67-60 setback at UW-River Falls on Saturday.

The Pointers shot season-low totals in every category at 39.7 percent from the field, 23.1 percent from three-point range and 50.0 percent at the free throw line in dropping their first game in seven outings this season. UW-River Falls, which is the top defensive team in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, remained undefeated at 5-0.

The Pointers entered the game shooting 54.6 percent from the floor and 45.8 percent from three-point range, but UW-River Falls had held its first four opponents to a frigid 28.2 percent.

UW-River Falls led the entire first half, though never by more than five points while taking a 25-23 lead into halftime. The Falcons maintained their lead to start the second half and pushed the advantage to six points at 42-36 with 11:53 left for their biggest lead to that point.

UW-Stevens Point then came to life and scored the next eight points for its first lead of the game. Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) scored on a three-point play following her own steal to put the Pointers ahead 44-42 with 9:48 to play.

The Pointers were up 45-44 when Chantele Melgaard hit a three-pointer to put the Falcons back in front. Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) followed with a basket to tie the game for the Pointers, but Traci Reimann answered with her first three-pointer of the season with 7:15 left and Melgaard hit a jumper for a 52-47 lead and the Falcons never trailed again.

Chelsea Kranz (Columbus/Columbus) and Neuenfeldt each had three-point plays in the final minute for the Pointers with Neuenfeldt's free throw cutting the lead to 63-60 with 19 seconds left. However, Kelli Hilt made two free throws to seal the game for the Falcons.

Reimann had 17 points and Hilt had 14 points, making 10 of 12 free throws for the Falcons. Neuenfeldt led the Pointers with 15 points.
