Pointers Enjoy Return Home With Win Over Eagles

Getting back home to Berg Gym proved to be the perfect remedy for the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team as the Pointers snapped a two-game losing streak by knocking off Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leader UW-La Crosse 83-60 on Saturday.

The Pointers shot 57.4 percent from the field and ran their home winning streak to 18 straight games, including 17 wins by double figures. UW-Stevens Point is now 7-2 overall and 2-2 in the WIAC, while UW-La Crosse fell to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the WIAC.

The game was tight for the first seven minutes before UW-Stevens Point burst out with an 8-0 run to take a 22-11 lead with 10 minutes left in the half. After the Eagles scored the next three points, Janell Van Gomple (DeForest/DeForest) buried wide open three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to put the Pointers ahead 28-14 with 6:54 left in the half.

UW-Stevens Point led 39-28 at halftime and missed its first field goal attempt of the second half as the Eagles crawled to within 39-32, however, the Pointers made their next seven shots and eventually led 53-33 with 16:06 left in the game. Katie Webber (Reedsburg/Reedsburg), who led the Pointers with a game-high 15 points, was fouled after making layups on consecutive possessions during the key second half run.

UW-La Crosse came no closer than 14 points the rest of the way as the Pointers dominated the boards with a 45-25 rebounding advantage. Van Gomple finished with 13 points and Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) added 11 points for UW-Stevens Point, which was seven-for-12 from three-point range, but committed 28 turnovers.

Katy Searing was the Eagles' leading scorer with 11 points as 12 of UW-La Crosse's 14 players scored points. The Eagles were held to 32.1 percent shooting from the field.
