A perfectly executed corner kick early in the match proved to be the difference as the UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team fell to seventh-ranked Trinity (Tex.) 1-0 on Sunday night in San Antonio, Texas.
The Pointers outshot the Tigers 12-10 for the match and held possession for a majority of the time, but it was Trinity that cashed in on its scoring opportunity as 5-foot-9 defender Lauren Andrews headed in a perfect cross from Michelle Grambeau at the 6:07 mark of the first half.
The Tigers' goal came moments after UW-Stevens Point nearly scored on a corner kick of its own as
Liz Kidd (Shorewood/Shorewood)'s header sailed just over the crossbar. Kidd also had the Pointers' best scoring opportunity of the match in the 13th minute, drilling a shot that hit off the bottom of the crossbar and stayed out of the net.
UW-Stevens Point held an 8-4 advantage in shots in the first half and, after the Tigers controlled play in the early moments of the second half, the Pointers regained their momentum and continued to control possession.
Alison Regal (Appleton/East) had two shots midway through the half, getting one blocked and one saved for the Pointers' best opportunities.
The Pointers played stingy defense the entire match, limiting chances for the Tigers' speedy forwards. Trinity's Jasmine Martin broke loose in the final three minutes, but Pointers' goalkeeper
Meredith DeCaluwe (Naperville, IL/Central) (pictured, above) stuffed her at the top of the box for one of her four saves.
UW-Stevens Point is now 1-1 for the season and returns home to face another ranked opponent when 24th-ranked University of Chicago visits the Pointer Soccer Bowl on Thursday at 4 p.m.
