Pointers' Dominance of Blugolds Finally Ends

In a match that was statistically even in every category but the final score, UW-Stevens Point finally had its women's soccer domination of UW-Eau Claire come to an end as the Blugolds snapped a 24-match winless streak in the series with a 3-0 win on Saturday in Eau Claire.

The Pointers, who were 22-0-2 in the last 24 meetings between the schools, outshot the fifth-ranked Blugolds 4-3 in the first half, but UW-Eau Claire scored the period's lone goal with a score from Liz Kooistra midway through the half.

Shots for the match were even at 9-9 and each team had three corner kicks, but the Blugolds scored a pair of goals three minutes apart in the second half to put the match away. Maria Iaizzo scored on a long range shot and Emily Waldorf added another goal. It was UW-Eau Claire's first win over the Pointers since Oct. 20, 1991 in the Wisconsin state championship match.

Meredith DeCaluwe (Naperville, IL/Central) made six saves for the Pointers, who lost for just the fifth time and allowed three goals for the first time in 108 all-time Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season matches. The Pointers are now 96-21-11 over their last 128 overall matches.

UW-Stevens Point is now 5-2-2 overall with both losses coming to top five teams, having also lost to second-ranked Trinity (Texas).
