Late Warhawks' Run Results in Defeat for Pointers

UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater each had lengthy second half runs, but it was UW-Whitewater's which had the lasting impact on Wednesday as the Warhawks rallied for a 62-52 victory for their first win at Berg Gym since 2000.

UW-Whitewater led for much of the game before the Pointers used a 12-0 run for a six-point lead midway through the second half, however, the Warhawks rallied with an 8-1 run of their own and held off the Pointers for the victory.

The matchup was a key game in the stretch run of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings as UW-Whitewater remained in second place and improved to 16-6 overall and 9-4 in the league. UW-Stevens Point dropped to 15-6 overall and 7-6 in the conference.

The Warhawks had lost their last six visits to Berg Gym by an average of 21.5 points, coming no closer than 17 points in any of the trips since Jan. 19, 2000. In fact, the Pointers have now lost two straight at home after winning their previous 22 on the home court.

UW-Whitewater opened up an early 10-3 lead and maintained the lead throughout the first half before the Pointers used a late run to close to within 27-25 at halftime. UW-Stevens Point, which is now 0-5 this year when trailing at halftime, trailed 34-29 in the second half prior to its big run.

Nathalie Lechault (Chavannes de Bogis, Switzerland/Int'l School of Geneva), who had 18 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks, hit two free throws with 15:11 left and Katie Webber (Reedsburg/Reedsburg) followed with a three-pointer to tie the game. Lechault added another inside basket and Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) scored four straight points to finish the spurt and put the Pointers ahead 40-34 with 12:15 to play.

UW-Stevens Point held a 47-45 advantage with 7:34 left, but went just one-for-10 from the field down the stretch as the Warhawks regained the lead. After Dana Thompson scored inside to tie the game, Lindsey Buechner put the Warhawks ahead 49-47 with a jumper with 5:54 remaining.

A fastbreak layup by Mary Donohoo gave UW-Whitewater a four-point lead and Lechault cut the advantage to 51-49 with an inside basket for the Pointers with 3:52 remaining. UW-Whitewater scored the next four points to lead by six before two free throws by the Pointers' Chelsea Kranz (Columbus/Columbus) trimmed the lead to 55-51 with 2:11 left. However, Buechner added a pair of free throws and a basket on the next two possessions as the Warhawks closed the game with a 7-1 run.

Buechner scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half and was one of three players to lead the Warhawks in scoring. Nicole Bundy came off the bench to hit three three-pointers and scored 13 points, while Morton also notched the team-high total. Neuenfeldt added 11 points for the Pointers, who shot just 29.6 percent from the field and three-for-16 from three-point range.
