Neuenfeldt Leads Pointers Past UW-Platteville

Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) scored 18 points and drained three three-pointers to lead UW-Stevens Point to a 69-51 win over UW-Platteville on Wednesday at Berg Gym.

Neuenfeldt hit back-to-back three-pointers late in the first half to give the Pointers a 30-22 lead and UW-Stevens Point rolled from that point in improving to 13-3 overall and 5-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. All 13 of the Pointers' victories this season have been by double figures as they improved to 10-0 at home.

UW-Stevens Point opened the game with a 19-4 lead as the Pioneers made just one of their first 13 field goal attempts and had nine turnovers in the first 10 minutes.

The momentum completely flipped after that point. After the teams exchanged baskets, the Pioneers went on a 16-3 run to cut the lead to 24-22 with 3:32 left in the first half. The Pioneers' run was fueled by their rebounding as they grabbed eight of the 10 missed shots during the span that halted on Neuenfeldt's consecutive long-range shots. The junior's season-high point total came in just 21 minutes played.

UW-Stevens Point took a 32-26 lead into halftime and opened the second half with a 13-3 spurt for a 45-29 lead with 17:03 remaining. UW-Platteville scored four straight points to cut the lead to 12 points, but Chelsea Kranz (Columbus/Columbus) and Nathalie Lechault (Chavannes de Bogis, Switzerland/Int'l School of Geneva) followed with inside baskets for the Pointers, who led by at least 15 points over the final 14 minutes of the game.

The Pointers, who entered the game ranked third in the NCAA Division III in rebound margin, were outrebounded for just the second time all season as the Pioneers held a 41-38 advantage on the glass. UW-Stevens Point shot 47.5 percent and held UW-Platteville to 31.1 percent shooting and 23 turnovers.

Kranz had 11 points and Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) added 10 points for UW-Stevens Point. Lechault added six points and seven blocked shots. Lisa Grantman made three second half three-pointers and finished with 12 points for the Pioneers, who fell to 8-9 overall and 2-6 in the WIAC.
