Becky Pepper (Medford/Medford) made the most of her first start of the season, scoring a team-high 12 points as the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team used another balanced performance to roll to an 87-53 win at Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday.
Pepper, starting in place of
Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers), was four-for-six from the field, made both three-point field goal attempts and had four steals in the Pointers' triumph.
Chelsea Kranz (Columbus/Columbus) added 10 points, while Jessie Sporle had a solid all-around game with 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Overall, 13 different players scored the Pointers, who had 50 of their 87 points scored by the bench in improving to 12-3 overall. UW-Stevens Point, who had no player play more than 22 minutes of the game, shot a blistering 61.3 percent from the field, including 68 percent in the second half by hitting 17 of 25 field goal attempts.
MSOE slipped to 6-11 with the loss. The Raiders, who had just seven players in uniform are coached by former Pointers' standout Jessica Ott, marking the first time UW-Stevens Point coach
Shirley Egner has faced one of her former players on the opposite bench.
UW-Stevens Point jumped on the Raiders early with a 12-0 run, forcing turnovers on five straight MSOE possessions during the spurt to build a 23-9 lead with 11:19 left in the first half. A Raiders' free throw cut the lead to 13 points, but
Camille Brueggen (Viroqua/Viroqua) followed with an offensive rebound basket and MSOE came no closer the rest of the way.
The Pointers 51-25 at halftime and Pepper hit a three-pointer to open the second half as UW-Stevens Point led by at least 25 points throughout the second period. The Pointers held a dominating 40-14 advantage in rebounds, grabbing 16 of their own 24 missed shots.
