Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) started and ended a comeback from a two-goal third period deficit for the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team in a 4-3 overtime victory over St. Scholastica on Friday at Willett Arena.
Trailing 3-1 with less than eight minutes left in the final period, Fish scored with assists from Russel Law and
Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond) to pull the Pointers within a goal. Just 46 seconds later,
Nick Zebro (Mosinee/Mosinee) scored off a pass from
Dan Francis (Roseville, MI/Roseville) to tie the game.
In overtime, the Pointers benefitted from a five-minute major penalty on the Saints and cashed when Fish converted a rebound off a shot from
Tom Upton (Austin, TX/Westwood) for the game-winner with 1:05 remaining. The win snapped a four-game winless streak for the Pointers, who are now 4-4-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. St. Scholastica is 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the NCHA.
Andy Cankar (Lockport, IL/Lockport) opened the game with an unassisted goal just 3:02 into the first period to stake UW-Stevens Point to an early lead. However, St. Scholastica bounced back with a first period goal from Kris Boyce and second period scores from Joey Hughes and Kyle Luschinski to take the two-goal advantage.
Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) made 35 saves for the Pointers and Tyler Johnson stopped 21 shots for the Saints, who held a 38-25 advantage in shots. UW-Stevens Point had all five of the game's shots during the overtime period.
