Pointers Surrender Late Goal to Settle for Tie

UW-Stevens Point's men's hockey team was nearly one minute away from snapping its three-game losing streak and earning its first Northern Collegiate Hockey Association win of the season, but Lake Forest's Adam Tobias scored with 1:03 remaining to force a 2-2 tie Saturday in Lake Forest, Ill.

The teams played a scoreless five minute overtime period as the Pointers now sit 3-4-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the NCHA. Lake Forest is 2-7-1 overall and also 0-3-1 in the league.

Tobias scored the game's first goal on a first period power play, but the Pointers tied the game on a power play goal by Nick Zebro (Mosinee/Mosinee) that was assisted by Tom Upton (Austin, TX/Westwood) and Brett Beckfeld (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong).

Tom Vernelli gave the Pointers a 2-1 lead at the 9:22 mark of the second period with assists from Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond) and Matt Stendahl (Forest Lake, MN/Forest Lake). UW-Stevens Point had three power plays in the third period, but was unable to add to its lead. The Pointers were one-for-nine on the power play in the game.

Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) made 33 saves for the Pointers, who held a 36-35 advantage in shots.
