UW-Stevens Point's
Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond) scored just 36 seconds into the game, but it was all UW-Stout from that point as the Blue Devils handed the Pointers a 6-2 men's hockey setback in a matchup of nationally ranked teams on Friday in Menomonie.
Calleja notched an unassisted goal in the opening minute to put the 12th-ranked Pointers ahead before the 13th-ranked Blue Devils scored six unanswered goals to take control. Adam Boche and Andrew Stearns both scored goals in the next six minutes to put UW-Stout up 2-1 after one period.
The Blue Devils added two more goals in the second period as Cory Mozek and Jake Erickson each scored for a 4-1 advantage. UW-Stout put in two more goals from Derek Hanson and Scott Hellquist in the third period before the Pointers added a late goal from
Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) that was assisted by Calleja.
The Blue Devils outshot the Pointers 30-25 as
Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) made 24 saves for UW-Stevens Point while allowing more than four goals for the first time in his career.
The game was the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association opener for both teams. UW-Stout is now 5-0-1, while UW-Stevens Point fell to 3-2 overall and hosts seventh-ranked UW-River Falls on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
