The third tight meeting of the season between UW-Stevens Point and UW-Eau Claire went the Blugolds' way as they evened the season series with a 3-2 victory in the regular season men's hockey finale on Saturday in Eau Claire.
UW-Eau Claire built a 3-1 lead early in the second period and held on for the victory, avenging a one-goal loss the previous night and a tie earlier this season. The loss dropped UW-Stevens Point to 7-16-2 overall and 3-10-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association, while UW-Eau Claire is 9-12-4 overall and 2-9-3 in the league. The teams finished tied for sixth in the standings, but UW-Stevens Point earns the sixth seed for next weekend's league playoffs by virtue of having more league victoris.
The Pointers scored the game's first goal when
Ross Johnson (International Falls, MN/Falls) scored at the 14:48 mark of the first period with assists from
Matt Stendahl (Forest Lake, MN/Forest Lake) and
Nick Zebro (Mosinee/Mosinee). UW-Eau Claire, which outshot the Pointers 18-9 in the opening period, scored just over a minute later on a goal by Mark Stockdale and then finished the period with a power play goal by Andrew Johnson with 51 seconds left.
The Blugolds took a two-goal lead on a goal from Greg Peterson at the 2:19 mark of the second period and UW-Stevens Point rallied with a power play goal from
Reed Lally (Duluth, MN/East) that was assisted by
Brett Coburn (Addison, IL/Addison Trail) at 6:44 of the third period. UW-Stevens Point held a 10-7 edge in shots in the final period and pulled the goalie for the final 30 seconds, but was unable to get the equalizer.
UW-Eau Claire held a 33-31 advantage in shots for the game as
Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) made 30 saves for the Pointers and Tyler Brigl stopped 29 shots for the Blugolds.
