UW-Stevens Point got off to a fast start and snapped a six-game losing streak by rolling past Lake Forest 6-2 in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association contest on Friday at Willett Arena.
The Pointers outshot the Foresters 47-19 for the game, including 19-8 in the first period in racing to a two-goal lead for the victory.
Matt Stendahl (Forest Lake, MN/Forest Lake) had two goals and
Nick Zebro (Mosinee/Mosinee) and
Brett Beckfeld (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) each had two assists in the win as the Pointers improved to 6-14-2 overall and 2-8-1 in the NCHA. Lake Forest was undefeated in its last seven meetings with the Pointers, but fell to 3-17-2 overall and 0-9-2 in the league.
Dan Francis (Roseville, MI/Roseville) got the Pointers out to an early lead, rifling a long power play goal over the shoulder of Foresters' goalie Scott Campbell just 4:46 into the game. Zebro and
Tom Upton (Austin, TX/Westwood) each had assists and it marked the first time in the past five games the Pointers have scored first as they improved to 5-2 this season when tallying the game's first goal.
Stendahl put the Pointers ahead 2-0 with a goal at the 14:55 mark of the period off a pass from Zebro. Lake Forest countered on a goal from Tyler Canal at the 8:30 mark of the second period to pull within 2-1. However, UW-Stevens Point answered on its sixth power play opportunity of the period as
Rolf Ulvin (Edina, MN/Edina) scored with assists from Beckfeld and
Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka).
Stendahl scored off an assist from
Ross Johnson (International Falls, MN/Falls) at the 6:43 mark of the third period and Johnson put the Pointers ahead 5-1 on a shorthanded goal at the 9:09 mark off a pass from Beckfeld. It marked the fourth straight game and fifth time in six games the Pointers have scored shorthanded.
Lake Forest's Peter Morrison followed with a power play goal 29 seconds later, but
Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond) finished the scoring for the Pointers on a goal with 33 seconds left in the game.
Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) picked up the win and made 17 saves for the Pointers, while Campbell stopped 41 shots for the Foresters.
