Yellowjackets Score Early to Defeat Pointers

Pat Lee (Schaumburg, IL/) had a goal and two assists, but an early UW-Superior lead proved too much for the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team to overcome in a 5-3 loss to the Yellowjackets on Friday in Superior.

UW-Superior scored two goals in the first five minutes of the game and then added a pair of power play goals in the first four minutes of the second period for a 4-1 lead. The Yellowjackets, ranked seventh in the NCAA Division III, are now 16-4 overall and 6-3 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. UW-Stevens Point lost its fifth straight game to fall to 5-13-2 overall and 1-7-1 in the league. It was the Pointers' third straight game against a top 10 ranked opponent.

Corey Stark and Corey Lennartson scored UW-Superior's early goals before the Pointers bounced back on a shorthanded goal by Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond) off a pass from Lee at the 8:58 mark of the first period. The Yellowjackets held their 2-1 advantage until Joel Gaulrapp and Rob Turnville scored power play goals just over two minutes apart in the second period.

Myles Palliser put UW-Superior ahead 5-1 with a third period goal before the Pointers' Brett Beckfeld (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) scored on the power play with assists from Lee and Adam Setten (New Hope, MN/Armstrong) with 1:19 remaining. The Pointers pulled the goalie and got a goal from Lee with assists from Calleja and Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) with 14 seconds left in the game.

UW-Superior outshot the Pointers 35-34 as Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) made 30 saves for UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers play at St. Scholastica on Saturday.
