Early Power Play Goals Too Much for Pointers

Three power play goals in the first 12 minutes of the game were too much for the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team despite a late rally in a 5-4 loss to UW-Stout on Saturday at Willett Arena.

The Blue Devils scored on their first three power play chances and added another power play score before holding off a furious two-man advantage for the Pointer in the final minute for the victory. UW-Stout is ranked fifth in the country and improved to 16-1-2 overall and 7-0-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. UW-Stevens Point dropped its fourth straight game and fell to 5-12-2 overall and 1-6-1 in the league.

UW-Stout had an early five-on-three power play and scored on both chances with Andrew Stearns scoring at the 5:16 mark and Andy Wiesner getting a goal at the 6:29 mark. Luke Schroeder finished the trifecta at the 11:53 mark to put UW-Stout ahead 3-0.

The Blue Devils had a fourth power play later in the first period, but this time the Pointers did the scoring with Nick Zebro (Mosinee/Mosinee) taking a perfect feed from Matt Stendahl (Forest Lake, MN/Forest Lake) for a shorthanded breakaway goal at the 16:35 mark. UW-Stout, however, bounced back and went ahead 4-1 on an even-strength goal by Scott Motz with 41 seconds left in the first period.

Russel Law scored a power play goal off a pass from Adam Setten (New Hope, MN/Armstrong) for the Pointers in the second period and UW-Stout went ahead 5-2 at the 4:49 mark of the third period on a power play score from Nick Klaren.

The Pointers' comeback started with 10:05 left in the game as Rolf Ulvin (Edina, MN/Edina) scored off passes from Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) and Pat Lee (Schaumburg, IL/). Late in the period, UW-Stout committed back-to-back penalties, giving the Pointers a two-man advantage with 1:35 remaining. UW-Stevens Point pulled the goalie for a six-on-three advantage and scored 21 seconds later when Nate Sorenson (Tomah/Tomah) launched a long-range shot with assists from Fish and Lee.

The Pointers still had a power play and pulled the goalie for the final 54 seconds, but were unable to get the tying score. UW-Stevens Point outshot the Blue Devils 15-4 in the final period and 34-24 for the game. Mike Stone made 30 saves for UW-Stout.
