Late Gustavus Goals Halt Pointers' Comeback Bid

A pair of late goals 21 seconds apart halted UW-Stevens Point's comeback attempt as Gustavus Adolphus held on for a 6-3 men's hockey victory on Saturday in St. Peter, Minn.

The Pointers pulled to within 4-3 on a shorthanded goal by Pat Lee (Schaumburg, IL/) with 6:43 left in the game and then had four shots stopped on an ensuing power play. However, the Gusties killed off the penalty and got a goal from John Arundel with 1:48 left and another from Ben Ollila with 1:27 left to seal the victory.

UW-Stevens Point outshot Gustavus Adolphus 10-3 in the final period and 21-20 for the game, but the Gusties converted three second period goals in the victory that pushed their record to 8-6-1. The Pointers fell to 5-10-2 overall with the loss in their final non-conference game of the season.

Brett Beckfeld (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) gave the Pointers an early lead with an unassisted goal 2:05 into the game. Gustavus Adolphus tied the game later in the period and went ahead 3-1 in the second period before the Pointers' Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond) scored with assists from Lee and Nick Zebro (Mosinee/Mosinee) midway through the second period. The Gusties added a later in the period before their two late goals clinched the win
