First Period Flurry Sparks Pointers to Rout

A late first period flurry sparked the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team in snapping its five-game winless streak in a big way with an 8-2 rout of Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday at the Mosinee Recreation Center.

The Pointers broke a 1-1 tie by scoring three times in the final three minutes of the opening period and went on to bury the Cobbers and improve to 5-8-2 overall, while Concordia-Moorhead fell to 6-6 overall.

Brett Beckfeld (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) was involved in the Pointers' first three goals, scoring at the 2:12 mark and then assisting Pat Lee (Schaumburg, IL/) for a score at the 17:19 mark before scoring again 45 seconds later. Mosinee product Nick Zebro (Mosinee/Mosinee) added a goal in his hometown rink with three seconds left to finish the first period as the Pointers broke a string of five straight scoreless opening periods.

Concordia-Moorhead held an 11-8 advantage in shots in the second period, but UW-Stevens Point scored the only two goals with Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) scoring at the 1:33 mark of the period and Lee netting a power play goal at the 15:12 mark. The Cobbers failed to score on six power plays in the period, including two five-on-threes that each lasted over a minute.

Concordia-Moorhead was one-for-11 on the power play in the game and UW-Stevens Point was three-for-11 in a game that featured 34 penalties for a combined 98 minutes.

Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond), who had two assists in the game, added a goal at the 4:08 mark of the third period to put the Pointers ahead 7-1. Tony Janssen scored both the Cobbers' goals, including a goal at the 13:57 mark of the final period, before Dan Francis (Roseville, MI/Roseville) finished the scoring for the Pointers with 24 seconds left in the game.

UW-Stevens Point had 14 of its 18 skaters record a point in the game as Fish and Francis each had a goal and an assist, while Nick Bydal (East Grand Forks, MN/East Grand Forks) and Adam Setten (New Hope, MN/Armstrong) had two assists apiece.

Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) had 31 saves for the Pointers, who held a 39-33 advantage in shots.
