Mosinee Ice Fails to Aid Pointers Against Johnnies

UW-Stevens Point's first home men's hockey venture outside of Stevens Point didn't result in the outcome the Pointers desired as they fell 5-2 to St. John's on Friday at the Mosinee Recreation Center.

The Pointers saw their winless streak extend to five games with the loss as they slipped to 4-8-2 overall, while the Johnnies are now 5-7 overall.

The Johnnies' Pat Connelly scored the only goal of the first period with a power play goal just 1:31 into the game as UW-Stevens Point was held scoreless in the opening period for the fifth straight game. Connelly's goal marked the eighth time in nine games the Pointers have fallen behind to open the game and was also the only power play tally in a contest that included 108 penalty minutes and 17 power plays between the two teams.

UW-Stevens Point tied the game at the 5:32 mark of the second period when Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) took a pass from Matt Stendahl (Forest Lake, MN/Forest Lake) and Anthony Noreen (Chicago, IL/) and raced up the ice before blistering a shot over the shoulder of St. John's goaltender Vince Wheeler.

However, it took the Johnnies only 14 seconds to retaliate as Connelly scored his second goal for a 2-1 advantage. Nate Meinz rebounded a save off a breakaway by Pat Eagles to give St. John's a 3-1 lead later in the period.

Scott Paul put in another rebound for the Johnnies at the 11:52 mark of the third period and Tom Freeman caught Pointers' goalie Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) out of the net for an easy putaway at the 17:02 mark that put St. John's ahead 5-1. UW-Stevens Point scored just 16 seconds later when Chris Conway (Westminster, CO/Northwood) scored his first career goal off a pass from Adam Setten (New Hope, MN/Armstrong) to finish the scoring.

St. John's held a 34-26 advantage in shots as Wheeler stopped 24 shots for the Johnnies and Paulson made 29 saves for the Pointers. St. John's had 17 penalties for 58 minutes and the Pointers were also penalized 17 times for 50 minutes.

The Pointers will play in Mosinee again on Saturday when they host Concordia-Moorhead at 7:30 p.m.
