UW-Stevens Point and UW-Eau Claire combined for six power play goals as the teams skated to a 4-4 men's hockey tie on Saturday afternoon at Willett Arena in Stevens Point.
The game did not count in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings and left UW-Stevens Point at 4-5-2 and UW-Eau Claire at 5-6-2. Three of the Pointers' last four games have now gone to overtime as the Pointers extended their unbeaten streak in overtime games to 15 straight games (2-0-13).
Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) scored power play goals with 1:14 left in the second period and 1:02 into the third period to rally the Pointers to a 4-3 lead. However, the Blugolds tied the game with a power play goal from Tyler Trudell with 9:16 left in regulation. UW-Stevens Point put 16 shots on goal in the third period and four more in overtime, but Blugolds' goalie Ryan Mensing finished with 40 saves.
Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) had 30 saves for the Pointers, including three in overtime.
The game's only even strength goal was the only goal of the first period as Nicholas Kuqali scored to give the Blugolds' an early lead. The teams combined for 31 penalties, including 27 in the final two periods.
Rolf Ulvin (Edina, MN/Edina), who finished with a goal and two assists after being sidelined with an injury the past seven games, scored a shorthanded goal 11 seconds into the second period to tie the game. UW-Eau Claire then went ahead with power play goals from Greg Petersen and Andrew Johnson for a 3-1 lead.
Brett Coburn (Addison, IL/Addison Trail) scored later in the period before Fish's two goals gave the Pointers the lead.
UW-Stevens Point is now 13-0-2 in its last 15 home games against UW-Eau Claire, though the last two meetings resulted in ties.
