UW-Stevens Point was shutout for the first time in 61 games as UW-Superior goalie Chad Beiswanger turned away all 24 shots in a 5-0 victory over the Pointers on Saturday at Willett Arena.
The Pointers hadn't been blanked since a 4-0 loss to Bethel on Nov. 6, 2004. UW-Stevens Point was unable to convert on eight power play opportunities in the loss as it fell to 4-5-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. UW-Superior is 8-1 overall and 2-1 in the NCHA.
UW-Stevens Point outshot the seventh-ranked Yellowjackets 8-4 in the first period, but neither team scored until UW-Superior's Corey Lennartson scored a shorthanded goal one minute into the second period. The goal came just seconds after the Pointers failed on a five-on-three power play that lasted 1:15. Lennartson picked the puck from Pointers' goaltender
Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) behind the net and scored on a wrap-around shot.
The Yellowjackets went ahead 2-0 as Braden Desmet scored the first goal of his hat trick off a pass from Corey Stark with 8:01 left in the second period.
UW-Superior added three goals in the third period with Desmet scoring on a breakaway just 14 seconds into the period. Stark also assisted that goal and scored himself at the 8:03 mark. Desmet picked up the hat trick with a goal at the 16:16 mark of the period.
Paulson made 32 saves for the Pointers as UW-Superior owned a 37-24 advantage in shots for the game.
