Five different players scored goals as the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team opened the 2006-07 season with a road victory over St. Mary's on Friday in Winona, Minn.

The Pointers jumped on the Cardinals quickly with two early goals as Dan Francis (Roseville, MI/Roseville) scored off assists from Tommy Upton and Brett Beckfeld (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) on a five-on-three power play just 2:20 into the game. Nick Zebro (Mosinee/Mosinee) added a goal at the 3:33 mark with assists from Francis and Lally. The 2-0 lead stood after one period despite the Cardinals holding a 12-4 advantage in shots.

St. Mary's evened the game with a pair of second period goals as Adam Gill scored just 1:12 into the period and then David Gross notched the first of his two goals on a five-on-three power play at the 11:30 mark. The Cardinals' power play goal was its only man-advantage goal in 14 power play opportunities.

UW-Stevens Point regained the lead just 45 seconds later as Matt Stendahl (Forest Lake, MN/Forest Lake) scored with an assist from Beckfeld. The pair struck again with 1:30 left in the period as Beckfeld scored with assists from Stendahl and Karl Larsen (Princeton, MN/Princeton) for a 4-2 lead.

Gross scored his second goal at 1:01 of the third period to bring the Cardinals back within a goal, but Russel Law finished the scoring with assists from Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond) and Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) at the 13:09 mark.
