Box Score A balanced offensive performance led UW-Stevens Point to a
4-1 victory and a split of a key women's Northern Collegiate Hockey Association opening weekend series at UW-Superior on Saturday.
The third-ranked Pointers had four different players score goals and six other players record assists in the victory over the fourth-ranked Yellowjackets. UW-Stevens Point is now 5-1 overall, while UW-Superior is 7-2. Both teams are 1-1 in league play after UW-Superior won Friday's contest 3-1.
After a scoreless first period that saw each team put just three shots on goal, the Pointers'
Madison Darud (Apple Valley, MN/Eastview) staked her team to a lead 6:54 into the second period off a feed from
Nicole Greeneway (Sheboygan/Sheboygan North). UW-Stevens Point's
Michelle Sosnowski (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) scored just over five minutes later with assists from
Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) and
Tracy Butler (Marshfield/Marshfield) for a 2-0 advantage.
The Pointers went up 3-0 at the 7:50 mark of the third period on a power play goal from
Katy Lankey (Baraboo/Baraboo) that was assisted by
Jamie Lewandowski (Rolling Meadows, IL/Fremd) and
Jenna Daggit (St. Paul Park, MN/Park of Cottage Grove). Erin Kegley brought UW-Superior within 3-1 on a power play goal less than two minutes later, but
Jessica Edward (Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's (MN)) sealed the win for the Pointers with a four-on-four goal that was assisted by
Chris Hanson (South St. Paul, MN/South St. Paul).
Each team put 19 shots on goal as
Amy Statz (Wisconsin Rapids/Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln) made 15 saves for the Pointers and Rikki Nespor stopped 18 shots for the Yellowjackets. UW-Stevens Point is now 8-1-1 in the last 10 meetings between the teams and hosts Augsburg in a non-conference game on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
