Box Score UW-Stevens Point used a solid all-around offensive and defensive performance to post a 6-0 victory over St. Thomas in a matchup of two of the West Region's winningest women's hockey programs in recent years Sunday at Ice Hawks Arena.

The Pointers got two goals each from Chris Hanson (South St. Paul, MN/South St. Paul) and Kellye Nelson (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) and the 20th career shutout by senior Amy Statz (Wisconsin Rapids/Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln) for the victory. UW-Stevens Point is now 11-4-1 overall, while St. Thomas fell to 10-6 following its largest margin of defeat since an 8-2 setback to Gustavus Adolphus on Feb. 9, 2001. The Pointers also beat the Tommies 2-1 in the season-opener on Nov. 3.

After a scoreless first period, Hanson started the scoring by scooping up a loose puck in neutral ice, skating into the zone and launching a shot over the shoulder of Tommies' goaltender Lauren Bradel. Hanson added an assist on the Pointers' next goal as Nelson scored on a five-on-three power play less than three minutes later. Jenna Daggit (St. Paul Park, MN/Park of Cottage Grove) also assisted the goal. Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) later made a nifty backhanded move around Bradel off a pass from Tracy Butler (Marshfield/Marshfield) to give the Pointers a 3-0 lead midway through the period.

St. Thomas had a chance to cut into the lead with a five-on-three power play that lasted for 1:45, but the Pointers managed to kill off the Tommies' best threat of the day. UW-Stevens Point killed off all seven of St. Thomas' power plays for the game.

In the third period, Jamie Lewandowski (Rolling Meadows, IL/Fremd) took the puck the length of the ice and scored to put the Pointers ahead 4-0. Hanson added her second goal less than a minute later, launching a long shot from the blue line that slipped through Bradel. Nelson finished the scoring with a goal midway through the period off a pass from Trish Piskula (Antigo/Antigo), who also assisted Lewandowski's goal.

Statz made 22 saves for the shutout as the Pointers held a 27-22 advantage in shots.
