Box Score Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) scored with 3:42 left in the third period as UW-Stevens Point notched a pair of late goals to rally for a 2-1 road victory at St. Thomas on Friday in a matchup of nationally-ranked women's hockey squads in St. Paul, Minn.
The season-opening victory came in the debut of Pointers' coach
Ann Ninnemann, who was named the team's head coach in August after playing for the team from 2001-05.
St. Thomas, ranked eighth in the country, scored the game's first goal at the 18:09 mark of the first period on a goal by Alison Turgeon.
UW-Stevens Point, ranked sixth nationally, failed on six power play chances and finally scored on the seventh try midway through the third period when
Lauren Kellin (Grand Rapids, MN/Grand Rapids) scored with assists from
Rachael Graves (Bemidji, MN/Bemidji) and
Sarah Phillips (Kelowna, B.C./St. George's School (RI)) to tie the game. Grossmann then scored unassisted for her sixth career game-winning score.
UW-Stevens Point held a 29-26 advantage in shots with
Amy Statz (Wisconsin Rapids/Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln) making 25 saves for her 52nd career victory. The Pointers play again Saturday at St. Olaf at 2 p.m.
