Madison Darud (Apple Valley, MN/Eastview) notched her first career hat trick and
Kellye Nelson (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) tied a single-game school record with five assists as the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team routed St. Catherine 9-1 on Friday at Ice Hawks Arena.
Darud was the only UW-Stevens Point player with multiple goals as seven different players recorded goals and three others had assists. Nelson entered the game with one career assist and tied the record held by Tracy Truckey against UW-Eau Claire on Nov. 15, 2002.
The win marked a season-high scoring total for the Pointers, who improved to 9-2-1 overall. St. Catherine had just 12 players in uniform for the game and fell to 0-10-1 overall.
UW-Stevens Point scored four times in the first period with
Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes), Darud,
Jenna Daggit (St. Paul Park, MN/Park of Cottage Grove) and
Michelle Sosnowski (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) recording goals. Nelson assisted the final two goals of the period and also helped on
Nicole Greeneway (Sheboygan/Sheboygan North)'s second period goal and a goal from Darud to open the third period.
Jessie Suter and
Tracy Butler (Marshfield/Marshfield) added goals for an 8-0 lead before St. Catherine's Aryn Ball scored a power play goal with 2:23 left in the game, denying a shutout for Pointers' goalie
d'Andra Phillips (Swartz Creek, MI/Swartz Creek) in her first collegiate game. Darud scored just 27 seconds later with assists from Nelson and Greeneway to finish the scoring.
Darud also had an assist for a four-point game, while Greeneway had two assists in addition to her goal. Phillips made seven saves in the victory as the Pointers outshot the Wildcats 48-8, including 24-3 in the final period.
