Box Score UW-Stevens Point got back on the winning track and snapped the nation's longest unbeaten streak with a 4-2 win over Lake Forest in a penalty-filled game on Tuesday in Lake Forest, Ill.
The Pointers, who suffered a loss and a tie to UW-River Falls over the weekend, scored two power play goals and a shorthanded goal to snap the Foresters' eight-game unbeaten streak. UW-Stevens Point, ranked seventh in the NCAA Division III, is now 7-2-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association entering a 34-day layoff. Lake Forest fell to 5-1-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the league.
Only one of the game's seven goals came in an even strength situation as the teams combined for 19 penalties. The one even strength goal was a big one, however, as
Jamie Lewandowski (Rolling Meadows, IL/Fremd) scored unassisted with four minutes left in the second period to give the Pointers a 3-2 lead.
Jenna Daggit (St. Paul Park, MN/Park of Cottage Grove) added a goal seven seconds into a power play with assists from Jessie Suter and
Katy Lankey (Baraboo/Baraboo) with 7:16 left in the third period to put UW-Stevens Point ahead 4-2.
The Pointers were forced to fend off two Lake Forest power plays down the stretch, including one for the final 51 seconds when the Foresters also pulled the goalie for a six-on-four advantage.
Amy Statz (Wisconsin Rapids/Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln) made 28 saves in the victory as the Pointers held a 32-30 edge in shots and a 17-7 advantage in the final period.
After Lake Forest's Courtney DeHoey scored a shorthanded goal 7:22 into the game, the Pointers tied the game just 23 seconds later on the same penalty.
Rachael Graves (Bemidji, MN/Bemidji) scored her first goal of the season off a pass from
Trish Piskula (Antigo/Antigo) for a power play goal.
Lankey scored shorthanded just over four minutes later for a 2-1 lead before the Foresters tied the game on a score by Courtney Bean at the 4:19 mark of the second period.
UW-Stevens Point is now 24-0-3 all-time against Lake Forest and 13-0 in Alumni Memorial Rink. The Pointers are off until Jan. 9 when the Pointers host St. Olaf in a non-conference game.
