Box Score Rachael Graves (Bemidji, MN/Bemidji) scored two power play goals to break a late tie and help
Amy Statz (Wisconsin Rapids/Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln) equal the NCAA Division III women's hockey record for goaltender victories as UW-Stevens Point earned a 5-3 win over Finlandia on Saturday at Ice Hawks Arena.
Graves, a sophomore defenseman who entered the game with two career goals and one this season, scored with 10:24 left in the game and again with 4:47 remaining to snap a 3-3 tie and give the Pointers the victory.
It marked the 62nd win of Statz's four-year career, tying her with Carolyne Roy of Plattsburgh State (2002-05) and Katie Kogut of Middlebury (2003-06) for the national record. Statz, who finished with 11 saves in Saturday's win, is now 62-16-10 in her career.
Entering the third period, it didn't appear the Pointers would need Graves' dramatics for the victory as UW-Stevens Point held a comfortable 3-1 lead while limiting the Lions to nine shots over the first two periods. However, Finlandia converted a five-on-three power play with a goal from Emily Conrad just 1:32 into the final period and the scored again at the 8:06 mark when Adele Horrigan scored her first goal of the year by launching a long shot through several defenders to tie the game.
Graves scored the game-winning goal off a perfect back-door pass from
Lauren Kellin (Grand Rapids, MN/Grand Rapids) and then added the insurance goal with passes from
Sarah Phillips (Kelowna, B.C./St. George's School (RI)) and
Tracy Butler (Marshfield/Marshfield).
The Pointers held a 35-14 advantage in shots for the game and finished three-for-seven on the power play. Finlandia converted two of its four power play chances.
Madison Darud (Apple Valley, MN/Eastview) scored the only goal of the first period for UW-Stevens Point with assists from
Trish Piskula (Antigo/Antigo) and
Kellye Nelson (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial). The Lions tied the game at the 2:50 mark of the second period on a goal from Jana Riutta, but the Pointers countered just 25 seconds later with Butler scoring off passes from
Michelle Sosnowski (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) and
Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes).
Jenna Daggit (St. Paul Park, MN/Park of Cottage Grove) added a power play goal at the 9:44 mark with assists from Nelson and Sosnowski for the 3-1 advantage.
UW-Stevens Point has now won three straight games and is 12-4-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. Finlandia is 4-14-2 overall and 0-9-1 in the league.
