Late Shorthanded Goal Sends Pointers to Defeat

Box Score A shorthanded goal with 1:02 left in the game made numerous oddities reality for the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team in a 4-3 loss at UW-Eau Claire on Saturday.

The Pointers had a 68-game unbeaten streak snapped when leading after two periods and also lost back-to-back games for the first time since midway through the 2004-05 season. The setback also marked just UW-Eau Claire's second victory over the Pointers in 21 all-time meetings.

Power plays had been the scoring method for most of the game with four of the game's first six goals coming via the man-advantage. UW-Stevens Point looked to pick up momentum when UW-Eau Claire was whistled for a penalty with 2:39 left in the contest, however, it was the Blugolds who took advantage. Karen Hebert scored the game-winner on a breakaway off a pass from Laura Suppes.

The teams traded even strength goals in the first period with Kellye Nelson (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) scoring off an assist from Chris Hanson (South St. Paul, MN/South St. Paul) for the Pointers before the Blugolds tied the game on a goal by Lauren Havard.

UW-Stevens Point went ahead with two power play goals from Michelle Sosnowski (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) just 18 seconds apart in the second period. The first came on a five-on-three advantage and the second came with the other UW-Eau Claire player still in the penalty box. Hanson assisted both goals and finished with a career-high three points. Jamie Lewandowski (Rolling Meadows, IL/Fremd) added an assist on Sosnowski's second tally.

UW-Eau Claire pulled within a goal on a power play goal from Michelle Stohr with three minutes left in the second period and Suppes added a power play score at the 1:57 mark of the third period. The Pointers had been 65-0-3 in their last 68 games when leading after two periods since a 2-1 overtime loss to Williams (Mass.) on Jan. 2, 2003.

The Pointers, who were 18-1-1 all-time against UW-Eau Claire prior to the loss, fell to 9-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. UW-Eau Claire is 8-7-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the league.
